2010-2011 Alpine Camps

GMVS Offers camps throughout the year and are an integral part of the ski academy experience.  Athletes attend camps according to their progressions and goals.  Athletes consult with their head coach and parents to determine which camps to attend.

SUMMER

New Student Orientation   June 5-6, 2010

For all incoming new students, and all previous year’s winter termers, we have a conditioning and testing camp that is part of the New Student Orientation weekend.

D-Style #1(GMVS J1/2 girls)   June 13-19, 2010

Brandon, Dani and other GMVS girls’ coaches (as needed).  This camp focuses on working on developing strong technical fundamentals for the J1/2 girls.

D-Style #2(GMVS J1/2 boys)   June 20-26, 2010

Brandon, Steve and other GMVS boys’ coaches (as needed).  This camp focuses on working on developing strong technical fundamentals for the J1/2 boys.

D-Style #3(GMVS J3/4 boys and girls)   June 24-July 3, 2010

Coached by Brandon, Steve and other GMVS and guest coaches (as needed), this camp focuses on working on developing strong technical fundamentals for J3/4 athletes.

Les 2 Alpes, France June 20-July 2, 2010

Luc’s camp is primarily geared toward J3s, although the content works for older racers.  Luc Robillard heads this effort along with other guest coaches.

GMVS Summer Conditioning Camp  Dates July 12-16, August 17-21

These camps are staffed by current GMVS coaches and intend to bridge the gap from spring to fall with a supervised conditioning session.  The July camp targets younger GMVS athletes (J3/4 and some J2s).  The August camp is open to all GMVS athletes.

FALL

Valle Nevado September 12-28, 2010
All ages and abilities are welcome at this camp.  We will work on fundamentals, introduction to gate training, gate training, and speed elements—all depending on age, prior summer skiing progression and individual needs.  J1/2/3/4s are welcome to attend this camp.

Soelden October 24-November 7, 2010
This is a Nor Am prep camp for athletes preparing for early season Nor Am competition.  We target a small group of athletes for this experience.

NOVEMBER

Nakiska/Colorado (FIS and Devo FIS) J1/2 November 10-22, 2010 (tentative dates)
November gate training in Colorado is good for those J1/2 age athletes for whom December completion is scheduled.  We will host have separate programs going for boys and girls, and for those on a FIS race plan and a Devo FIS/NJR race plan.  The objective of the Colorado camp is to give our FIS and Devo FIS racers a high-level, pre-competition gate training option.  Head coaches will determine the better option (FIS or Devo FIS camp) for each athlete.  All J1/2s welcome.  We are finalizing plans for next November, but for now we believe that girls will go to Nakiska and boys will go to Colorado.

Colorado (J3/4) November 14-23, 2010 (tentative dates)
The J3s ski camp in Colorado in November is primarily directed toward building the athletes’ technical free skiing base with some introduction to gate training.  Most free skiing will take place at A Basin and Loveland.  We may train some at Vail too.  All J3/4s are invited to attend.

DECEMBER

Nakiska/Colorado Nor Am prep camp  November/December, 2010(tentative dates)

We have run a small camp for J1/2 kids who need specific training in the early Nor Am events—particularly racers preparing for December Nor Ams in Canada.

Stoneham, Quebec December 5-10, 2010
Each training group has different goals going into the camp, but they all revolve around gate training.  For the J3s, this is the first opportunity for introduction to high volume gate training.  For Nor Am athletes, it is a chance to hone, or just stay in tune with their skiing.  The terrain at Stoneham best suits those who are developing gate related skills, need repetition on more gentle terrain, and need a higher volume of gate training.

Sugarbush December 1-17, 2010
As we attempted in December 2009, (somewhat stymied by weather and lack of snow, then too much snow!), we plan to lease space from Sugarbush on the upper mountain at Mount Ellen for gate training.  During the Stoneham week, those who stay at Sugarbush will get lane space for part of the day for fine tuning gate skills.  For the other weeks, we will have gate training and free skiing lanes on the upper mountain for all groups as conditions permit.

EUROPEAN MID-WINTER RACE TRIPS
Led by our European Coordinator, Mike Loidl, we send on average four to six groups to Europe per year for racing and training opportunities.  Based out of the school’s Koessen, Austria home, our athletes train at nearby venues (sometimes with National Team members), and race throughout central Europe.  The purposes and goals of specific trips and for specific athletes vary.  Generally speaking, the school supports such travel to provide ski-specific race education and opportunity, and to increase cultural awareness.
