Alpine Scoreboard
The slopes have been busy places all week, and GMVS racers have moved up to the podium once again.
J4's
We’ll start with our youngest racers, the J4s, who raced GS at Burke last week. 7th-grader Maddie Davis took the gold for the overall race, while Katie Queally also turned heads with her second-run win (she fell in the opening run). For the boys, Justin Boes took home the bronze in the overall, with Ian Woolson taking 10th and Toby Lanser 14th. Also fast in one run was Nick Skovran, who tied for second in the second run.
FIS & NorAM
In FIS action, the calendar was again full, and the speed demons took to Narrow Gauge once again at Sugarloaf for a pair of downhills. In the opening race, Danny Duffy ’12 took second place, with first-timer Ryan Mooney making an impressive jump from 52nd to 9th. Drew Duffy ’13 was 14th. On Day 2, Danny turned up the heat a bit to take the win, with brother Drew joining him on the podium in 3rd. Mooney had another good race, finishing 10th, while senior Graham Quisenberry jumped in to 15th place. For the ladies, a pair of first-time downhillers took center stage, with Lexi Skovran finishing 11th in the first race and Mike Smith ’15 taking 9th on Day 2. Simona Croccolo ’12 was 13th in the opener, while Skovran took 15th in the second race.
The FIS tech races also continued, with the UVM Carnival on tap for some local action. GMVS alumni Andrew McNealus and Chad Lawrence skied well for their respective teams (Middlebury and UNH), with Andrew finishing 8th in GS and Chad taking 9th in slalom. On the ladies’ side, Bates College got some great results from Katie Fitzpatrick ’11 and Zoe Livingston ’09, who finished 9th and 13th, respectively. In the slalom, UNH’s Laura Rozinowicz was 15th.
The Eastern Cup then headed south to Suicide 6 for the Fisk Memorial Slalom, and Andrew McNealus continued his hot streak by winning the race on his former home hill. Thomas Woolson ’12 had a solid race in 13th, while Chad Lawrence stayed fast in 14th.
Out west, the big event was the NorAm week in Vail, and Anna Kikut was the story there in the opening slalom. With her 11th-place finish, Anna was second junior and she scored her career best in the discipline. Also on the first page was Devin Delaney from U. of Denver, who took 15th. For the men, Chris Frank mixed it up with a top field to finish 14th in the opening GS.
USSA
The USSA calendar featured a flurry of events, starting with a long drive to a short slalom at Bromley. Nick Post shook off the cobwebs from the van ride to take 4th, while Jack Schibli moved in to 8th place. Geoff Pyke also did well to finish 14th. On Sunday the crew again took to Rt. 100, this time to Pico, where Charlie Raposo celebrated his first VARA win in slalom, using a blistering second run to finish ahead of Jack Schibli, whom he had tied in Run 1. Also finishing well were Sam Worley in 7th, Gabe Rosen and Henry Anderson, who tied for 8th, Jay Boland (in 14th) and Colby-Sawyer’s Cooper McNealus ’10 in 15th.
