LAX Results

May 10, 2011 ~

The lax teams had a mixed week, as the season rolled on, with a few hiccups due to mother nature. The boys took three straight wins, starting with an 11-1 win over Sharon Academy last Wednesday. Sam Worley ’13 led the attack with a hat trick, while Graham Quisenberry ’12 notched a pair of goals. Hans Halvorsen ’12 dished off for 3 assists while grabbing a goal of his own. Also scoring were Mitch Grimmer ‘12, Brendan Todd ‘13, Trevor Harnsberger ‘13, Tomek Dobrzanski ’11 and Drew Duffy ‘13. Senior goalie Dan Bell was busy, making 15 saves.

The team then faced Mt. Abraham at home the next day, and the 12-7 score reflected a bit of a slow start by the hosts. Hans Halvorsen kept the heat on with 4 goals and 3 assists, while Drew Duffy, Will Clifford ’12 and Sam Worley each scored twice. Trevor Harnsberger and Graham Quisenberry rounded out the scoring, while Dan Bell made 8 saves.

Saturday in Montpelier brought one of the tougher opponents, as the Solons, fresh off an overtime win at Harwood, put up a stiff fight. GMVS came through in the end, breaking open a close match to win 9-3. Mitch Grimmer tallied a hat trick, with Will Clifford and Hans Halvorsen netting 2 apiece. Single tallies by Graham Quisenberry and Trevor Harnsberger sealed the win. Dan Bell had a sparkling game in net, making 10 crucial saves.

The winning streak came to an end, though, as Monday’s tilt with Lamoille brought a bitter 9-8 loss. It was GMVS’ first game on the upper field, and though the conditions were perfect, the Lancers’ organized attack wore GMVS down. The game was locked at 2-2 after one quarter, but a run by Lamoille put the hosts in a 9-5 hole with just over 2 minutes left. GMVS made a furious comeback, highlighted by goals by Hans Halvorsen (assisted by a long pass from goalie Dan Bell), Mitch Grimmer and then Drew Duffy, but it was too little too late, as the team dropped its first of the season. Halvorsen ended the game with 3 goals, while Graham Quisenberry had a pair. Ninth-grader Max Stamler also got in the act with a 4th-quarter goal of his own. Dan Bell made 11 tough saves, but was plagued by the Lamoille offense which hit hard from close range.

The team travels to Otter Valley in Brandon on Thursday in a rematch of last season’s opening-round game (won by GMVS). Hopefully the team will get back to its winning ways!

The girls had a rough go of it, and had one game postponed due to rain. On Tuesday they made the long trek to Manchester to take on perennial power Burr and Burton Academy, and came away with a 16-4 loss. Simona Croccolo ’12 had her first game in goal, holding the Bulldogs to an 8-2 halftime lead with 10 saves. Hannah Kadah ’11 matched that in the second half, as the potent BBA offense forced her to make 15 saves. The offense was led by sophomore Kelly Glander’s 2 goals, while Susan Campbell ’12 and Dani LeBlanc ’12 each scored once.

After rain pushed the hoped-for match with SMS to the 19th, the team hosted undefeated and top-ranked (in division 2) Oxbow on Saturday. Unfortunately the Olympians were able to shake off the long drive to prevail 20-11 after jumping out to a 12-4 halftime lead. It could have been a tougher loss had Simona Croccolo not made many of her 24 saves, as the Oxbow sharpshooters peppered the net. The GMVS girls fought hard, led by senior Haleigh Carbone’s 3 goals. Kelly Glander again got a pair of goals, as did Dani LeBlanc. Susan Campbell had a goal, and a trio of defenders snuck in to the act to score as well: Heidi Halvorsen ‘13, Hannah Kadah and Margaret Doemland ‘13.

In the ‘no rest for the weary’ department, the girls hosted division 1 power Essex on Monday, and fought to a respectable 18-6 loss. The Essex numbers (they are the largest school in the state!) wore down our intrepid bunch, as Simona Croccolo turned away 18 shots against a relentless attack. Up front, Haleigh Carbone scored on 4 of her 7 shots, while Susan Campbell and Dani LeBlanc each added a goal.

The week continues with another tough match at home on Wednesday at 4:30 against perennial division 2 power Chelsea, followed by a game at Montpelier on Saturday at 3 pm. The team is hoping to build on these tough losses to some very good teams to power into the second half of their season.
