Lax Goes Undefeated
May 31, 2010~A great week for the LAX teams as they both went undefeated. The Times Argus has been following the games with stories and photographs.
Of course, our own Jere Brophy has been following the games and here is his recap:
The girls started things off right on Monday, winning a thrilling overtime game at home against Oxbow. In alarmingly predictable fashion, the team spotted the visitors to a 4-0 lead to start off the game. GMVS came clawing back, though, to pull off the win.
The week heated up, literally and figuratively, and with temps over 90 degrees, GMVS finished off the season with back-to-back games. On Wednesday, the team headed to Harwood for the rescheduled tilt with the Highlanders (postponed due to snow a month ago…hard to believe). Once again, the girls made it tough for the coaches to relax, as Harwood led 6-4 at the half. The GMVS defense, driven by seniors Sam Davis and Emma LeBlanc, as well as Ainsley Carbone in goal, held the hosts to just one goal, and that was on the final minute of the game. Katherine Scalia had put the game on ice with a late goal, her second of the game, and the final of 9-7 reflected a satisfying team effort. Also scoring were Haleigh Carbone, who stood out with 4 goals, Susan Campbell ’12 with 2, and Dani LeBlanc ’12 with a single tally. Hannah Kadah ’11 and Carbone split time in net, making a total of 11 saves between them.
The regular season wound down at home on Thursday, and the girls completed the spotless week with a 12-10 win over Sharon Academy. This time the big scoring punch came from the youngsters: Kelly Glander ’13 had 4 goals, while Susan Campbell netted a hat trick. Also getting in on the act were Haleigh Carbone with a pair, and Olivia Frank ’13, Katherine Scalia, and Emma LeBlanc with a goal apiece.
The boys had a light week, but their flair for the dramatic made for a thrilling match at Milton on Friday evening. The game was a tight affair, as is typical of this matchup over the years, and GMVS had to claw back to knot the score late in the game. Goalie Jon Gonin ’11 made the biggest of his four saves on the night with just seconds left on the clock to force the overtime, and then Hans Halvorsen ’12 converted a pass from Sandy Vietze ’11 for his fourth goal of the game to seal the win. Sandy had a hat trick of his own, while Cooper McNealus ’10 and Sam Worley ‘13 each had a goal.
The postseason is now upon us, and on Wednesday GMVS will be Lacrosse Central. Both teams will be hosting the opening round games in the Division 2 tourney: The boys are the #5 seed with their record of 8-3, and host the #12 team, Otter Valley, at 4:30. At the same time, the girls (#8 seed) will be facing off on the east side of the Parker Center against #9 Randolph Union. For complete brackets, visit
