Historic Day for GMVS Nordic
Today was the third day of competition at the 2010 US Senior Nationals in Anchorage, AK. The events today were classic distances races (which we now affectionately call "the old fashioned" way), with the Open Men/Women completing 30km/20km and the Juniors 10km and 5km. Waxing was rather difficult as we received nearly six inches of snow and a little freezing rain during the course of the races--oh yeah and it was hovering right at the magical zero degree mark.
Athletes who had soft skis, big engines and tough attitudes rose to the top today. At the completion of the races the US Ski Team announced the World Junior, J1, and Under 23 Championship Teams. GMVS placed two athletes on these teams! David Sinclair is proving that he is one of the very best juniors in the country, placing fifth overall for Juniors (2nd J1) and taking the third spot on the Junior 1 Scandinavian Team that will compete in Kuopio, Finland at the end of the month. GMVS coach Tim Weston will serve as the Team Leader for this trip. Peter Kling, GMVS alum was named to the U-23 Team after his incredible 7th place finish in the Skate Sprint on the first day of Nationals. Peter is now training right here in Anchorage with the Alaska Pacific University team. This to my knowledge is a first -- two GMVS athletes representing the US Ski Team in International Competition. A very cool moment for our program.
