Alpine Results

December 22 2011 ~The FIS calendar was busy over the past few weeks, and GMVS skiers have been making some noise, with lots of top finishes all over the place. Most recently, the action was in Maine, New Hampshire and Quebec, and the podium featured plenty of familiar faces.

The guys were split between Sugarloaf for the Eastern Cups and Attitash for Development FIS races. Despite the challenging snow conditions (at least there was snow…), GMVS skiers found their way to the top of the heap. In the opening slalom, PG Sandy Vietze ‘11 had his best slalom result ever, finishing 2nd in a tough field. Tucker Marshall was 5th, while Middlebury College’s Andrew McNealus ’08 was 10th. Charlie Raposo ’14 was the fastest of the J2s in the race. The next day, PG AJ Ginnis ’11 put the hammer down yet again, steaming to a solid half-second win, his third on the season. Also notable was PG Miles Derrick ’11, who leapt from way back in 112th to finish 22nd, scoring his best point result ever. The weather conspired to limit the racers to one GS race, but Tucker Marshall made good use of the opportunity, taking the win by a quarter-second. McNealus again had a good day finishing 7th, while brothers Danny ’12 (11th) and Drew ’13 (13th) Duffy moved up well despite brutal snow conditions. Drew took top honors for the J2 crowd.

In Attitash, Trevor Harnsberger ‘13 grabbed his first FIS win, taking the slalom by 0.30 sec. Sophomore Neil Gallagher also skied well, moving up 22 spots to finish 11th. Day 2 was pretty rugged, and Nick Cosentino ’13 was able to move up to 14th place. They managed to get one GS in as well, and junior Alva Swing was the story, pushing ahead from #50 to take 7th. Nick Cosentino had another solid day, taking 11th

The ladies Eastern Cup series visited Sunday River this week for a pair of slaloms and giant slaloms. In the opening slalom, Katie Fitzpatrick ’11 continued on her fast streak, taking the win ahead of many of the east’s best collegiate skiers. PG Anna Kikut ’11 finished 5th, with Dartmouth’s Jackie Maier ’10 finishing 9th, just ahead of UNH’s Laura Rozinowicz ‘09. Also of note: Lexi Skovran started with bib 106 in her first FIS race ever, and landed in 26th place. The second slalom, Jackie Maier and Laura Rozinowicz went 9-10 once again. The GS races opened with a convincing victory by Anna Kikut, who had the fastest time in both runs to win over Jackie Maier. Sara Kikut ’11 made it a clean sweep for GMVS by finishing 3rd. The final race was a brutal affair, but young Lexi Skovran broke into the top seed, finishing 14th wearing bib #89.

There was also racing going on north of the border, as Mont Tremblant (GS) and Mont Blanc (SL), Quebec hosted FIS events. For the men, Simon-Claude Toutant ’09 had a great series, taking a GS win, and adding a 4th-place to that, while finishing 5th and 7th in slalom. Fred Durand ’08 showed good form, taking 10th and 11th in GS. Ben Deflavio ’09 jumped in in slalom, netting a 13th place. Marie-Elaine Lepine ’09 of UNH had two top-10 results, with a 5th in GS and 7th in slalom, to go along with a 13th in GS.

Out west, Chris Frank was busy in NorAm action, scoring 2 top-10’s in Super G, a 5th in Super Combined, a 7th and 11th in GS and 2 awesome results in slalom, good for 6th and 11th, but dropping his points to just over 15, very close to cracking the top 100 in the world.
