Soccer Teams in Preseason Mode

The boys’ and girls’ soccer teams hit the pitch on Monday, and with the opening games slated for next Saturday, the teams have a great run-up to the start of the season. The girls played in the Harwood Jamboree on Saturday, in which each team played 3 40-minute matches against teams from Vermont and elsewhere. Although only scrimmages, these matches certainly gave Sarah and Megan a sense of where the team stands, and by the looks of things, they must be pretty optimistic…

The opening game against nearby Mt. Abraham got off to a great start, with Emmy Mumford ’14 finding the net in the 7th and then in the 9th minute. The shutout was secured with a tally in the 36th minute by senior Sara Kikut. The team then donned its tie-dyed practice jerseys for a match against the team from Haddam-Killingworth High School from Higganum, CT, and the visitors proved to be a spirited test. After giving up a goal in the 3rd minute, GMVS struck back with the equalizer from Sara Kikut. ‘H-K’ came back in the 15th minute to go up 2-1 at the half, but GMVS had more in the tank, knotting the score with a goal by Anna Kikut ’14 (off a corner kick by her sister Sara), and then sealing the win with a goal by upstart sharpshooter Emmy Mumford with 8 minutes to go.

The team finished off the hot day’s scoring with a 1-0 win over Middletown, CT, with Sara Kikut drilling home a shot into the top of the net for the game’s only tally. Susan Campbell ’12 was solid in goal in all three games.

Saturday brings the season opener for all 4 teams, as the girls travel to Stowe HS for varsity and JV games at 11 am. The boys’ teams also hit the road, as they head over the mountain to Vergennes for 11 o’clock matches against the Commodores.
